Sometimes our skin is just not on fleek! And that's okay, usually my breakouts are due to a number of things including: eating too much sugar and dairy products, alcohol consumption, dehydration and of course, that time of the month. Whatever the reason for the sudden eruption of a new mountain range of my face, I go through my list of five or so tips to get my skin feeling alive and looking clear once again.
CUT THE CRAP - SUGAR, CARBS & ALCOHOL
I am beyond guilty of eaten more than the daily recommended intake of sugar and carbohydrates, I mean, who isn't?! But it's all those processed goodies packed with hidden nasties and preservatives that my skin just can't handle. When my skin reacts badly to the before mentioned I love to go all green and organic by switching my diet up, swapping out the super sugary snacks with veggie sticks and dip or blending them altogether to create a delicious green juice. I love a good night out and a few wines to go with but by the following morning my skin feels dehydrated and craving a good mask and some lovin'. I have recently discovered that the clearer the liquor the better the out come of my skin is afterwards - Vodka shots anyone? Only joking, but seriously keeping hydrated with water both throughout your night out and on a daily basis is very important, so don't let that H2O out of sight. This makes a real difference to my complexion which only makes me what to drink more.
CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES
Possibly one of the most tedious jobs there is when it comes to makeup and beauty but once I get set-up with my trusty 90's throwback playlist I really get into it. Most makeup professionals recommend a once weekly wash but I on the other hand am slightly more lazy and tend to only wash them two or three times a month. Yes that is gross but hey I warned you that I was lazy. The importance of actually washing them is not only to keep them in good nick and improve the longevity of the brush, but also to clean out the product and grime built up and bacteria on the brush. Plus, once the jobs complete the next time your apply your makeup you'll have beautifully clean and swishy brushes to play with.
OPT FOR LIGHTER, BREATHABLE BASES
I truly believe in this tip, especially during the hotter months. I tend to wear more matte and higher coverage bases in the winter but change those up with lighter, more breathable BB creams and foundations in the summertime. If possible I actually prefer to wear little to no base at all and instead focus on making my brows, eyes and lips the main feature of my makeup routine. I usually pop a little concealer on any major blemishes and under eye circles and if my skin is looking good, well then I'm completely base free! A few of my favourite lighter bases are: NARS Sheer Glow, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation, Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream and Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer.
HAVE A PAMPER EVENING
Although my bubbles baths are few and far between, when I do take time out to relax in the tub I make sure to skin my skin some extra TLC. Starting off by removing all my face and eye makeup and then going in with a good cleanser to really clean the skin. I love something like the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Afterwards depending how my skin is shaping up; if I've got a few blemishes going on then I swear by the Lush Mask of Magnaminty face mask, but if I'm dehydrated and have super dry skin then the Caudalie Moisturising Mask is a must!
ADJUST YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
Whether its summer or winter, you need to adjust your skincare based on what the seasons is and the varying degree of temperatures. For me I find that my skin is usually much dryer and dehydrated in the winter months and in so I make sure to stay away from matte makeup bases during the day and to slap on some heavy duty moisturiser in the evenings. When the summertime rolls around and my skin becomes less dehydrated I make sure to switch up my thick creams for lighter alternatives, my all time favourite being the Clean & Clear Essentials Moisturiser.
